Oedipus and the Sphinx - Gustave Moreau. 206.4x104.8
Symbolist artist Gustave Moreau addresses in his painting the ancient Greek myth of how the hero and king Oedipus met the Sphinx on the road to Thebes - a winged monster with the body of a lion and the head of a woman who asked the same riddle to all travelers: “Who walks in the morning on four legs, in the afternoon on two and in the evening on three? ” No one could give an answer, and the Sphinx devoured them, but Oedipus guessed that he was a man in infancy, adulthood and old age.
Moro Sphinx is endowed with the head of a beautiful girl, with the gracefulness of a cat, he jumps to Oedipus's chest, which makes the whole scene acquire a special sensual shade. But the hero looks at this creature with interest and concern: the Sphinx is the embodiment of nature, which always puzzles a person, and who knows whether he will solve them again, but will strive for knowledge.
