Ivan Shishkin was born on January 25, 1832 in Yelabuga (Vyatka province, now Tatarstan). His father was a merchant of the second guild - Ivan Vasilievich Shishkin.
Even in childhood, Shishkin was an outstanding person. His honesty has always been incorruptible, thanks to which he became relatively young as the mayor in Elabuga and stayed in this position for 8 years. He worked hard for the benefit of his native city: the water supply system he has built still partially operates.
However, the merchants turned out to be too crowded for Shishkin. He was fond of mechanics, history, archeology, natural sciences. Composed his own biography, released the History of the city of Elabuga, actively participated in excavations.
The father quickly noticed his son’s passion for art and sent him to study at the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture. A. Mokritsky, a very sensitive and attentive teacher, became the mentor of the young artist. He helped Shishkin find himself in art.
In 1856, the young man entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts to S. Vorobyov. However, he does not stop communicating with the previous teacher.
At the Academy, the young artist literally blossomed. His successes were actively noted with medals and awards. He even got the right to internship abroad, however, refused it and left in 1861 in his native Elabuga, where he worked tirelessly.
Still, Shishkin lived - in Switzerland and Germany. Also visited other European countries. He made friends with many representatives of world art. Repin also wrote about the hero Shishkin in his notes. By the way, this heroic voice sounded from Shishkin-rebel. In 1870, thanks to Shishkin, the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions appeared, which marked the beginning of a new art era.
Shishkin’s personal life was tragically formed. Both of his spouses died quite early. Behind them are both his sons. The deaths didn’t stop there - perhaps the closest person, the father, died after the people dear to his heart. Shishkin plunged headlong into the work, which remained his only joy.
At work, Shishkin died. This happened on March 20 according to the new style in 1898. The artist died suddenly. In the morning he wrote in the workshop, then he visited his relatives and returned to the workshop again. At some point, the master simply fell off his chair. This was immediately noticed by the assistant, but, running up, he saw that he was no longer breathing.
