Museums of Mont Saint-Michel Castle, France

Mont Saint Michel Castle originated in the 11th century on a small island near the river Kusnon. Despite the small territory of the island, the castle has several magnificent museums, so visitors will have something to see, in addition, the castle itself is very funny in its architecture and is of interest to many.

The castle began to be built back in 709, and immediately after its construction this place became popular with pilgrims. Initially, a church was built, then a monastery of Benedictine monks.

The owners of Mont Saint-Michel and the abbots of the monastery always got along with the rulers of France and tried to help them. Therefore, in 1066, the abbot of the monastery allocated a huge amount of money for the construction of ships that went to conquer the English lands. The campaign was successful, and William of the Conquerors (then ruler of France) also thanked the abbots. Since then, the territory of the castle has expanded significantly.

The castle has such a geographical position that there are still disputes about whose territory it is - Normandy or Brittany. Throughout its history, Mont Saint-Michel survived many wars, which of course affected its appearance. Often he was the possession of various English monarchs.

An interesting case was during the reign Philippa august French state. The French won another war, and captured Normandy. But it turned out that the castle was very seriously damaged. This very upset Philippe-Augustus, and he allocated funds to restore the former appearance of Mont Saint-Michel as soon as possible. So, in 1228 the castle acquired its former appearance, but in addition to this, a separate complex was built, which went down in history under the name “Miracle».

During the centennial war between France and England, the castle of Mont Saint-Michel was the hope of the French. He defended everything 119 knightswho vowed to defend him then the last breath. For 30 years, the British could not take this fortress, and were forced to retreat. Because of its powerlessness, the English troops were angry, and when they retreated, they destroyed all the buildings that were outside the walls of the castle.

During its existence, the castle was even a prison, which could contain about 300 prisoners. But since 1863, he acquired a completely different look, the prison was abolished, and the castle was reconstructed.

Mont Saint-Michel Castle has a historical museum, which houses a rather large collection of paintings, sculptures, antiques and other valuables. The attention of visitors is always attracted by the huge periscope of the 19th century, with which you can explore all the surroundings of the castle. In the historical museum is located Museum Archeoscopein which the guests of the castle learn about its history of creation and various other interesting moments related to the life of Mont Saint-Michel.

Tifen Museum - it created unique buildings and living quarters of the 13th century, the architect of which was Bertrand Dugecklen. He did this for his beloved wife - Tifen (hence the name of the museum).

Maritime Museum of Mont Saint Michel all seafarers will like it, as an incredible number of ship models are presented here.

I would also like to say that the castle is located at an altitude of 80 m above sea level, but there are seasons when water rises directly to the castle gates. Literally in 1 day it becomes an island, a very beautiful island of Mont Saint-Michel. Today, this place is protected by UNESCO as a valuable monument of architecture.
