A good museum of natural science leaves no room for miracles that are so lacking for everyone, perhaps because such a museum in Barcelona (Museum of Natural Science) is in 3rd place in popularity. Or maybe just because it is essentially 4 museums in 3 districts of the city, and there are also tickets for each.
The actual founder of this museum was the Barcelona trading broker and antique dealer, passionate about travel, numismatics, malacology and archeology, an amateur naturalist Francisco Martorell and Peña. On November 27, 1876, in order to prevent the plunder of his vast collections, he bequeathed them and 125,000 pesetas for their preservation to the city of Barcelona. 4 years after his death, the museum was opened and his collections became the basis of his exhibits.
The museum is located in the area of the current Citadel Park and still bears its name, and the building itself was designed by architect Antonio Rovira Trias and was the first in the history of Barcelona, built specifically for the museum. Today, there is the geological and paleontological part of the collection, including the collection of fossils and paleontological finds of Cervello and Vidal - a total of about 220 thousand exhibits.
Here in the park is the "Laboratory of Nature", located in the "Castle of the Three Dragons", which was built as a restaurant for the 1888 world exhibition designed by Luis Domenic and Montanerra. This is a zoological part of the collection. Perhaps it is here that more than half of the more than 3 million exhibits of all 4 sites of the Museum of Natural History are located, because here is represented almost the best collection of mollusks and arthropods in the world. Here you can wander for hours, looking at bizarre butterflies, various beetles and beautiful shells not only from all over the world, but also from all the depths of the sea. In addition, chordates are represented here - more than 18,000 stuffed animals and skeletons, from a shrew to a finwala.
In 2000, the zoological and geological museums were united, laying the foundation Museum of Natural Historywhich also includes Botanical Garden. It was created in 1930 in the Montjuic mountain region by Dr. Pius Font and Kuer. On the planet, only 1.7% of territories with a climate similar to the Mediterranean, but it is on them that 25% of all known plant species grow. Only living plants here, on 14 hectares of the botanical garden, 1597 species are represented - a total of 17672 copies. The exposition also has about 800,000 herbariums of plants throughout the planet, and the seed bank is considered the largest in the world.
And finally, the newest - Blue museum, built in a futuristic style in 2011 by the architects Herzog and de Meron, in the area of Forum Park. This is already a museum-show full of modern technology, with a bar, restaurant and shop, because it is impossible to attract dusty showcases of academic displays to the knowledge of a modern person. Here, on 9,000 m2 of exhibition space, a lot of the storerooms of the remaining divisions are represented. The entire history of our planet is painted in an interactive form, thematic exhibitions are constantly held, including living plants and various animals. And as usual, in the museum’s store you can buy books, souvenirs, and collectors can even buy some collectible material for their collections.
