Puppet Museum in Syracuse, Italy

Puppet Museum in Syracuse, Italy

Italy can be considered the birthplace of puppet theater. In Italy itself, and in other countries, puppet museums are one of the most beloved and most visited. Museums of Sicily dedicated to puppets are one of the richest in exhibits, traditions and entire dynasties of puppet crafts.

Puppy Puppet Museum in the city of Syracuse opened to visitors not so long ago, in 2006. The exhibition has many dolls, the oldest of which date back to the 16th century.

The most valuable exhibits are the heroes of the traditional puppet theater - knights, monsters, Saracens, villains, angels and devils, magicians and wizards. Performances with the participation of wooden actors once entertained the participants in the Crusades, they took part in the mysteries, which took place directly in the temples. Favorite stories include the adventure of the knight Orlando, his encounter with monsters and treacherous witches, his exploits on the battlefields, the defense of the weak and wretched.

Dolls make a strong impression. Other exhibits are no less interesting - technical devices, a collection of documents related to the development of puppet culture in Sicily.

The museum often hosts performances and talks about the behind-the-scenes secrets of the puppet theater. Conversations, lectures are held with the participation of hereditary puppeteers of Sicily (Moucheri, Ulivo, Pasqualino). All these people are passionately passionate about their work, everyone learned the craft from their fathers and grandfathers.

In addition to the museum, here you can see the workshop for the manufacture of dolls, as well as visit the performance of the puppet theater. In a small auditorium, which is constantly sold out (you need to take care of tickets in advance), the most real traditional puppet shows are held. At will, the audience is given programs in English, the performances themselves are in Italian.

Entrance ticket costs about 7 euros. The cost varies depending on what you want to see and what to participate in. In the gift shop you can buy a miniature doll, even a model of a real theater (expensive!).

The traditional Puppet Theater of Sicily is included in the register of treasures of the world culture of UNESCO, as a unique phenomenon that has remained unchanged for millennia.
